FAQ
How often should I shock my dugout/well?
Shocking your water source is great maintenance for burning off bad/over-growth, keeping the oxygen levels up, and cleaning your well. We recommend using 29% Hydrogen Peroxide and administering a calculated dose twice a year (spring and fall) to help the quality of your water source through the cold and hot seasons.
My dugout aeration is working but my water still smells. What can I do?
If your airline does not have an air stone/diffuser installed in the dugout at the end of the line, then we recommend adding one. The air/oxygen is not being dispersed enough under the surface to help stop the dead organic material from increasing. If you do have a type of diffuser, then we also recommend shocking your dugout with 29% Hydrogen Peroxide. The average dugout requires a minimum of 40L.
Can I add chlorine to my dugout water to clean it up?
We never recommend adding chlorine or bleach to surface water. Chlorine burns up organics to some extent, but gasses off creating trihalomethanes. Chlorination of organic water sources does not necessarily remove the organic content, but simply changes its colour by dying it. We recommend using 29% Hydrogen Peroxide to treat surface water sources.
Why is only my hot water smelling?
Smelly hot water can mean there is an issue with the water heater itself. There is a magnesium-based anode rod inside the heater tank that can give off a rotten egg odour when needing replacement. While on a dugout water source, your smell may come from the water heater cooking the organics that have built up in the tank over time. We recommend flushing your water heater.
